In 1902, Adams County was carved out of part of Arapahoe County, Colorado.

The county is named for Alva Adams, former Governor of the State of Colorado.

Brighton Colorado is the county seat.  The county is 18 miles long from north to south and 72 miles wide from east to west.

Colonel John D. Henderson built a ranch, trading post and a hotel on Henderson Island which was located in the South Platte River.  He sold provisions to the gold seeks on their way to the Pikes Peak Gold Rush.  Henderson Island was the first permanent settlement in the South Platte Valley.

Henderson Island is the site of the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds.

The Adams County Historical Society and Museum are located in Henderson, Colorado.
