Which Home is Right for You?
One of the first steps you'll need to take is to decide what you want in your new home.
Questions you should ask are:
What style of house do you want? Do you want a ranch, 2 story, tri-level, condo, townhouse, patio home, duplex, or high rise?
Do you want an older or newer home? These are also relative terms. An older home can be as old as 1890 or as new as 1960. A newer home may mean built after 1990 or as new as today.
What type of neighborhood interests you? Are you an urban, city person, or do you long for the wide open spaces with very few neighbors?
What size does the house need to be? Does the size include or exclude the basement?
What about the garage, 2 car or 3 car?
How long do you plan on living in this particular house?
Once you have established the type of home and you are ready to look, think about:
What the neighborhood looks like? Are the houses well maintained? Does it look like there are children around?
What activity is going on in the neighborhood? Is it quiet? Are there people on the streets?
Where are the shopping areas? Where are the schools, recreational facilities, etc.?
When looking at homes, try to keep the décor out of your decision. Do you best to look beyond the "show home" décor and the décor that just isn't. Imagine where you would put your furniture.
If the house is not for you, tell me and we will leave. If you feel it could work, look closely at the following items:
Woodwork, Walls, Paint, Ceiling, Floors, Doors, Windows, Lighting, Closets, Appliances, Fixtures, Storage, Yard, Location on the street
Also, look for cracks inside and outside the house. Look for any evidence of water damage. You'll want to do a home inspection. An inspector will look at things like crawl spaces, attics, and roofs.
